K12’s online pre-kindergarten program is designed to launch your 4- to 6-year-old on an educational journey that makes learning engaging and fun. With a curriculum that combines foundational education with play-based learning, your child will be ready and eager for their first day of kindergarten!

As a parent, you’ll have a unique opportunity to learn alongside your child, sharing in those magical “aha” moments as they discover new things about the world. Let’s explore how K12’s PreK program can give your child the academic and social foundation they need for success.

“Pre-Kindergarten” vs. “Transitional Kindergarten”

You might have come across terms like “pre-kindergarten” or “transitional kindergarten” and wondered what’s best for your child. While schools and states may use different names, these programs are designed for young learners who aren’t quite ready for a full kindergarten curriculum or don’t yet meet the age requirements for kindergarten. K12’s PreK program, for example, is an ideal choice if you’re looking to build those foundational skills early in a structured and flexible setting that meets your child’s needs and interests.

Laying the Groundwork: Why Foundational Skills Matter

In the preschool years, learning is all about building a solid foundation of essential skills. In these early years, your child is soaking up knowledge and developing essential skills that set the stage for future academic success. Our PreK curriculum introduces early literacy, numeracy, and social emotional growth in a natural and exciting way for young minds. Your child might start recognizing letters and sounds—the building blocks of reading—or playing with numbers and shapes in ways that lay the foundation for math skills.

And it’s not just academics. K12’s PreK program also emphasizes social emotional skills to help your child build confidence, empathy, and communication skills. Your child will learn to express their emotions, share, and interact with others, creating a positive academic and personal growth environment.

Learning Through Play: Because Fun Drives Engagement

Kids learn best through play, and K12’s PreK program puts this idea into action! Play-based learning is a core element of our preschool curriculum, combining hands-on activities with educational goals to make learning enjoyable. When your child learns through play, they’re more engaged, curious, and open to discovering new things.

Imagine your child exploring nature to learn about colors and textures, building with blocks to grasp basic math concepts, or listening to a story that develops language skills. Through activities like these, play-based learning reinforces what they’ve learned while making it easier to retain information. This approach builds foundational skills and keeps learning lively and enjoyable while keeping kids more engaged, curious, and open to discovering new things.

What’s included in K12’s PreK program?

K12’s PreK program offers a variety of tools to make learning engaging and effective for your child:

  • Certified Teachers: Our instructors are state-certified and trained in online teaching techniques, bringing passion and creativity to every class. They lead live virtual classes that make learning interactive and fun!
  • Live Classroom Sessions: Your child will dive into engaging, live virtual classes packed with songs, stories, games, and hands-on activities. And don’t worry about missing a session—every class is recorded, so your child can revisit the lessons anytime.
  • Curriculum in a Box: We send you everything your child needs for hands-on learning! From numbers and letters to art supplies, the box arrives packed with materials to keep your child engaged and excited about each activity.
  • Social Emotional Learning Lessons: Developing social-emotional skills is key for preschoolers, and K12 includes engaging video lessons that promote physical and mental health. These fun, interactive videos can help your child build confidence, empathy, and self-expression in a fun, interactive way.

Learning Anywhere: Flexibility in the K12 PreK Program

One of the best parts of K12’s PreK program is its flexibility. With K12, learning doesn’t have to happen in a traditional classroom—your child can learn anywhere! Whether at home, at the park, or out exploring the community, K12’s curriculum can adapt to wherever your family is. The program emphasizes movement and activities, encouraging your child to get up, move, and explore.

Imagine your child counting steps on a walk, identifying colors in nature, or even using chalk to practice shapes on the sidewalk. This focus on movement and exploration keeps your child active and makes learning a part of their everyday life.

How to Know if Your Child Is Ready for Kindergarten

Every child develops at their own pace, and K12’s PreK program is designed to meet them right where they are. If you’re wondering whether your child is ready for kindergarten, we’re here to support you. We offer resources like a kindergarten readiness webinar with checklists and practical tips to help you understand what’s needed for a smooth transition.

Building a Strong Foundation for Lifelong Learning

With K12’s PreK program, you’re not only preparing your child for kindergarten—you’re setting them up for a lifetime of curiosity and learning. Our program combines solid academics, play-based learning, and flexibility that fits your family’s lifestyle, making it an excellent way to foster a love for learning.

5 Reasons to Transfer Schools Midyear https://www.k12.com/tips-support-for-parents/5-reasons-to-transfer-schools-midyear/ https://www.k12.com/tips-support-for-parents/5-reasons-to-transfer-schools-midyear/#respond Fri, 22 Nov 2024 16:25:30 +0000 https://www.k12.com/?p=11300 Here we are, early in the school year. The initial excitement has started to wear off, and we parents are settling into the routine. It’s a great time to take a breath and think about what comes next—before the holiday season is upon us.

Ask yourself how your student is feeling so far.

  • Is school what they thought it would be this year?
  • Are they on the right track with assignments and grades?
  • Would they benefit from more of a challenge?
  • Do they need more support?
  • Could a change improve their learning environment?

For some students, a change in learning environment could fuel their happiness and academic success. But how do you know if switching schools in the middle of the year is the right thing to do?

Well, transferring midyear doesn’t have to be overwhelming or complicated. In fact, many families face this decision every year. In an era of school choice, there are options for families needing a change—including public school online.

Every situation and student is different, but there are several primary motivators that families consider when choosing to transfer in the middle of the year.

Mental Health

Your student’s happiness is the key to their success. Sometimes, our children face challenges in their current learning environment (like bullying) that can prevent them from learning safely and comfortably. With online school, your child can experience a more personalized approach to school in a safe space with caring teachers.

Academic Concerns

Whether your child is having a hard time academically, is a gifted learner, or would focus better without the distractions of a traditional classroom, online school allows students to concentrate on their own progress. Plus, their academic path can be adjusted to meet them where they are and will enable them to focus on areas that need improvement at a pace that works best for them.

Personalized Attention

Perhaps your child doesn’t fit into the constructs of their current learning environment. How much more could they discover about themselves if learning could be more personal? Families who transfer to online school midyear have found that their students can personalize their workspace, attend classes from anywhere there’s internet, take breaks as needed, and explore outside interests.

Health Concerns

Children with weakened immune systems, allergies, asthma, illnesses, or frequent medical appointments can continue school from home with fewer learning disruptions and less exposure to the germs and sicknesses that get passed around throughout the school year.

Surprising Situations

Life can throw us curveballs, and many families who made a midyear transfer shared that they never anticipated needing another school option. This might be due to an unexpected move, natural disaster, or other family change. No matter the circumstances, these families found that the flexibility and personalized approach of online school worked well when a different option was necessary.

What do I do if I need to transfer my child?

If you find yourself in a situation where your family needs to transfer schools, know there are options. Talk to a dedicated enrollment consultant to learn more about online learning with K12 and how to get started. No matter when you switch, you and your child will have lots of support to finish the school year strong.

How to Use the K12 Platform: A Guide for Students and Families https://www.k12.com/study-resources/how-to-use-k12-platform/ https://www.k12.com/study-resources/how-to-use-k12-platform/#respond Fri, 22 Nov 2024 16:04:56 +0000 https://www.k12.com/?p=11290 We keep children’s schoolwork organized, engaging, and visible to you as a parent in our interactive online learning platform called the Online School. The K12 platform is your one-stop-shop for online learning and this guide is designed to help parents and students get set up.

What is the K12 platform?

The Online School (sometimes known as the OLS) is designed for students and their families. The features and resources available through the K12 platform help keep learning on track and the items you need accessible at a glance.

In the K12 platform, your student can:

  • Access their live classes
  • Review their weekly schedule
  • Submit assignments
  • Work with classmates

And you as a parent can:

  • Check your student’s progress
  • Contact teachers with questions
  • See calendars and deadlines
  • Get important school announcements

The K12 platform has features that support each student’s learning journey, whether they’re working through assignments independently, collaborating with classmates on a project, or getting more one-to-one assistance from their Learning Coach (that’s what we at K12 call your role as a parent).

Read on for a more detailed K12 platform guide for families.

Your K12 Platform Account Setup

When you enroll at a K12-powered school, you’ll get an email from registration@k12.com about setting up your Online School accounts. You’ll set up one for yourself (as the parent) first, and that will help you complete your student registration. After that, you’ll set up a separate Online School account for your student.

Creating your accounts only requires some basic information and shouldn’t take long. Once you’re in, you can take your time exploring all the different features and resources. If you have more questions about setting up your accounts, you can reach out to help.k12.com for in-depth assistance or visit our FAQ page.

Account Types and Access Levels

One of the largest benefits of online school is being able to take classes and assignments on the go. With the K12 online platform, school is organized all in one place for students, plus parents have extra visibility into what their kids are learning and how they’re doing in classes.

Student accounts let children view and access their classes and assignments, communicate with teachers and classmates in monitored virtual environments, and even collect award badges for completing skills activities.

Parent accounts let you into your child’s learning. You can track their progress in each class, view their grades, reach out to teachers for extra support, and more. The Online School is also where you can see shipping and tracking information for your child’s educational materials that get sent out at the beginning of the school year.

There are slightly different versions of the K12 online learning platform for students in grades K–5 and then students in grades 6–12. The platform for younger students is designed for more direct engagement of parents since we know children require more attention to work through their classes and assignments at this age. The platform for older students is designed with more independent learners in mind, even though parents still have the same visibility.

Navigating Key Features of the K12 Platform

K12’s Online Learning School platform has a bunch of features for all you need at your fingertips.

Some of the features include:

  • Daily or weekly view class schedules
  • Easy to find messages for quick communication
  • Announcements from the school and teachers
  • Built in literacy tools to support all reading levels

Each class also has its own page with course details, required reading, age-appropriate resources, progress, grades, and discussion groups.

You can also learn more about how online learning works in general with K12.

K12 Platform Dashboard Overview

The K12 platform dashboard organizes everything you need in the Online School — making what you use most, easy to find and access. Here’s a quick guide to the K12 platform dashboard and how to use it.

On the top left of your dashboard, you’ll find quick notifications for new messages, your account information, and a full set of easy-to-find learning resources, including the:

  • K12 online library with more than 15,000 titles and growing every day
  • K12 Zone online community where students can virtually hang out
  • Quick link to live classes
  • Tallo platform for older students ready to start exploring careers

The navigation menu on the left of your dashboard links to your student’s schedules, classes, and school announcements. Going into the schedule section lays out everything you need to know about your child’s classes in a daily or weekly view option. The classes section has the details and materials for each individual course.

Virtual Classrooms

Students enrolled at K12-powered schools attend live online classes led by certified teachers. The teachers receive specialized training for instruction in virtual classrooms. Many of the teachers have experience in both traditional brick-and-mortar and online schools.

Online classes with K12 are sometimes called “Class Connects” and they are often scheduled for a set time of day. Many online school families use these scheduled live classes as anchors to plan out the rest of their weekly activities. If classes are missed for medical appointments or other commitments, they are recorded so students can still view and catch up on the information.

The Online School provides a platform to view live classes, ask the teacher questions, work in small breakout groups, see assignment schedules to work ahead if desired, and view progress and grades. Students log in to their Online School to see their daily or weekly schedule and can enter each live Class Connect session by simply clicking on the class block in that schedule.

All your student’s classes are organized in one place with the K12 Online School platform. Each class has its own section that teachers fill with:

  • Assignment details and deadlines
  • Extra resources for understanding
  • Links to peer discussion groups
  • Progress tracking tools
  • A grade book
  • Special announcements

Parent Resources and Tools

With K12, students and families aren’t experiencing online learning alone. Teachers and school counselors are available for class or content-specific questions and general support to help students succeed.

For more technical or specific questions about how to use the K12 platform, our Help Center is ready to assist. Visit help.k12.com for customer support related to the K12 online learning platform.

Parents also have access to a Learning Coach Community where they can connect with other families, at their child’s school and nationally, who are also navigating online school.

From Prep to Plate: Dive Into the World of Competitive Cooking! https://www.k12.com/k12-community/from-prep-to-plate-dive-into-the-world-of-competitive-cooking/ https://www.k12.com/k12-community/from-prep-to-plate-dive-into-the-world-of-competitive-cooking/#respond Wed, 13 Nov 2024 05:30:00 +0000 https://www.k12.com/?p=11226 The Rise of Competitive Cooking

Did you know that one of the first recorded cook-offs took place more than 1,000 years ago in Medieval Baghdad? Food historian Nawal Nasrallah tells the story of a culinary showdown between two brothers, Caliph al-Maʾmūn and al-Muʿtaṣim, as they competed to see who could whip up the best dish. This tale, found in her traditional cookbook, Annals of the Caliphs’ Kitchen, is just the start of competitive cooking’s long and flavorful history!

Over the centuries, cooking competitions have only grown more popular, becoming national and even international events. You might recognize a few famous ones, like the Pillsbury Bake-Off, which started in 1949, or the beloved National Pie Championships, held every year since 1995, celebrating all things sweet and flaky. There’s also the prestigious Bocuse d’Or, where top chefs from 24 countries battle it out in the finale in Lyon, France.

If you’ve ever tuned into MasterChef, Top Chef, or  The Great British Bake Off, you know the thrill of watching talented chefs work under pressure. These shows have brought competitive cooking into our homes and hearts, with contestants racing against the clock to present beautifully plated, skillfully executed, and, of course, delicious dishes.

Every cooking contest has its own rules, but most follow a familiar pattern: multiple rounds, intense challenges, and judging based on creativity, taste, skill, and presentation. And watching it all unfold is just as exciting—there’s something captivating about watching chefs pour their hearts into each dish, determined to come out on top!

Today, cooking competitions bring together home cooks, students, and professionals alike, all eager to show off their skills, creativity, and passion for food.

Why competitive cooking?

Ever wonder why competitive cooking is so popular? A big reason is that there’s something for everyone—competitions welcome all skill levels, from amateur cooks to culinary pros. All you need are a few solid cooking skills and a dash of creativity to join in!

Competitive cooking isn’t just about winning; it’s also a fantastic way to grow. Chefs get to flex their culinary muscles, work under pressure, and test their creativity, all while following strict rules. Competing side-by-side with other chefs can be a great way to see where they shine and where they might want to improve.

It’s also a chance to gain recognition and make connections. At the 2024 K12 Cook-Off, for example, student chefs were featured on WUSA9 Great Day Washington, a popular D.C.-area news show. They were able to showcase their talents, get media exposure, and even network with professional chefs. Opportunities like these can open doors and build confidence for chefs of all ages.

Bringing the Heat

Of course, competitive cooking is simply fun to watch! With the high-stakes environment, it often feels like a thrilling sporting event. There’s an excitement in seeing chefs give it everything they’ve got. Plus, viewers often walk away with new tips, techniques, or even ingredients to try in their own kitchens!

If you’re a fan of cooking shows, you know the thrill of those final seconds—“Chefs, you have 30 seconds!”—when every moment counts. Cooking competitions capture that excitement, with contestants plating their dishes under the wire for the chance to impress the judges. The K12 Cook-Off brings the same energy and offers student chefs a stage to shine. From plating to flavor, every detail matters!

A World of Flavors in Cooking Competitions

Cooking competitions come in all shapes and sizes, from friendly local cook-offs to high-stakes international events. With so many options, there’s always an exciting challenge waiting for you!

Virtual Competitions: Perfect for those who like to cook from the comfort of home! Participants submit photos or videos of their creations, often judged based on criteria like creativity, technique, or presentation. Prizes are usually small but still bring that sense of accomplishment.

Local Cook-Offs: These community-centered events often focus on one beloved dish, like BBQ, chili, or a dessert, and call on competitors to make their best version. Whether at a block party or a county fair, these are fun, welcoming ways to show off your skills and connect with neighbors.

National Competitions: Here, the stakes are higher, attracting skilled home cooks and pros alike. Top chefs from all over the country gather to compete for big prizes and national recognition, often creating dishes that wow and inspire.

International Competitions: Events like the Bocuse d’Or, the IKA Culinary Olympics, and the Pastry World Cup are where elite chefs go to test their talents on a global stage.

The Thrill of Mystery Baskets

Cooking and baking competitions come with their own rules, deadlines, and judging criteria, but nothing quite spices things up like a mystery basket challenge! You may have seen it on shows like Chopped or even in the K12 Cook-Off. These challenges push chefs to their creative limits, giving them just a few mystery ingredients—often a protein, a starch, and some unique vegetables—to transform into a delicious dish.

With the clock ticking (usually just 30 minutes to an hour), chefs must think fast to plan, cook, and plate a dish that wows the judges. It’s all about creativity, adaptability, and a dash of daring. High pressure? Absolutely—but for chefs, it’s also high reward!

Is your young chef ready?

If your student is eager to take on the challenge, check out a cooking competition near you or learn more about this year’s K12 Cook-Off that’s open to K12-powered students in grades 6–12.

Competitive cooking isn’t just about food—it’s about passion, creativity, and the joy of sharing something you’ve made. Join the excitement and see what your student can cook up!

What is the difference between an online teacher and a Learning Coach? https://www.k12.com/k12-community/online-teacher-vs-learning-coach/ https://www.k12.com/k12-community/online-teacher-vs-learning-coach/#respond Wed, 13 Nov 2024 05:00:00 +0000 https://www.k12.com/?p=11210 Effective online learning involves the same components as in-person learning: engaged students and qualified teachers. But with K12-powered schools, there’s another important role that helps to ensure successful outcomes. We call this role the Learning Coach, and every student is required to have one to assist them. Most often, a student’s parent or guardian fulfills Learning Coach duties, though another trusted adult may also be designated.

Learning Coaches, sometimes called LCs for short, help motivate and guide students while monitoring their learning progress. They help students log in for classes, or remind older students to do so, and track lesson and assignment completion. Learning Coaches also act as a liaison between the student and teacher or school, helping facilitate strong communication.

Though there may be some overlap between online teaching and Learning Coach duties, particularly in the early elementary grades, the main distinction between online teachers versus Learning Coaches is that online teachers are responsible for delivering content and direct instruction. In contrast, Learning Coaches support the learning process by helping their students with organization and administrative tasks associated with online school. They also serve as the responsible adult who can ensure that their student has no barriers to learning and stays on task.

What is the Learning Coach Community?

Because Learning Coaches are closely involved with their students’ education, it’s important for them to feel supported in their role. That’s why K12 fosters community, networking, and information exchange through the Learning Coach Community.

The Learning Coach Community is a secure online network exclusively available to adults supporting students enrolled in K12-powered schools. It serves as a place where Learning Coaches can connect, ask questions, receive personalized support, and find friends. All eligible Learning Coaches can access K12’s national community. Additionally, many schools have their own local communities for more specialized support and local connections. Through these communities, families have access to exclusive resources and events, both online and in person.

Why join the Learning Coach Community?

There are so many reasons to engage with your Learning Coach Community! Just as online teachers collaborate and connect with their peers, Learning Coaches find many of the same benefits in community with others who perform the same supporting role for their students. Top benefits include:

  • Shortening the learning curve for first-time online families
  • Accessing resources, events, and opportunities for family and student connections
  • Finding school information and resources compiled in one place
  • Learning tips and tools for online school success from people experienced in supporting their own students
  • Receiving support and advice in addressing individual student needs

Who can join the Learning Coach Community and how?

The Learning Coach Community is a secure network exclusively available to families with students actively enrolled in K12-powered schools. If you’re the Learning Coach of an approved student in any K12-powered school, you’re automatically a member of the Learning Coach Community. How to Help Your Child Succeed as a Learning Coach: Support and Growth https://www.k12.com/tips-support-for-parents/how-learning-coaches-support-student-success/ https://www.k12.com/tips-support-for-parents/how-learning-coaches-support-student-success/#respond Mon, 11 Nov 2024 05:00:00 +0000 https://www.k12.com/?p=10946 At K12, Learning Coaches—typically parents, guardians, or relatives—play a key role in their child’s success. Beyond homework help, they inspire students to build essential life skills, such as accountability, time management, and personal growth, paving the way for academic and long-term success.

Learning Coaches provide personalized, consistent support tailored to their child’s needs, helping keep them engaged, motivated, and on track. Keep reading to discover how you, as a Learning Coach, can make a significant difference in your child’s online learning experience.

What is a Learning Coach?

A Learning Coach is typically a parent or guardian actively supporting their child’s academic journey at a K12-powered school. This role fosters critical life skills like organization, self-motivation, and goal-setting while guiding students through coursework. While not a formal tutor, a Learning Coach adapts to their child’s needs, helping them grow into independent learners prepared for diverse learning environments. You can explore the specific tasks Learning Coaches perform to see how they support each student on their path to success.

DID YOU KNOW?

K12 provides comprehensive training and resources to help parents become confident Learning Coaches. If you’re passionate about being involved in your child’s education, this opportunity allows you to play an essential role in their growth and success.

The Importance of Learning Coaches in an Online Learning Environment

Online learning presents many opportunities that traditional schooling does not, and it also comes with some challenges. Students can become easily distracted in their homes, where all their favorite toys and devices are within reach. Maintaining a consistent routine while learning virtually can also be more difficult since unexpected obligations like caring for younger siblings, running errands, or completing home repairs can interrupt your family’s schedule.

This is where Learning Coaches play a pivotal role. They are a steady support system, helping children stay focused and engaged and ensuring they don’t fall behind. They can help students set up dedicated workspaces, fill out school planners, and work through time management activities.

One major benefit of online school is that parents, as Learning Coaches, can be more involved in their children’s education. They have visibility into the curriculum, connection to the teachers, and access to progress reports to help keep things moving.

Personalized Support for Each Student

Every child has a different learning style, pace, and set of needs. Who better to recognize and adapt to these differences than parents as Learning Coaches? Learning Coaches work with teachers trained in online instruction to provide personalized support that addresses each student’s strengths and areas where they may need extra help. Whether your child needs to bridge gaps in their understanding or requires additional challenges to stay engaged, as a Learning Coach, you’re empowered to collaborate with your child’s teachers to create a customized learning plan tailored for success.

Building Motivation and Accountability

While comprehension is essential, true academic success also depends on skills like self-discipline, time management, and accountability. Learning Coaches instill these habits by working closely with online learners to develop effective study routines, prioritize tasks, and manage their time wisely. This helps them excel in school and prepares them for life’s demands beyond the classroom.

Real-World Impact: Success Stories of Learning Coaches

What could your child achieve with the proper structure, motivation, and emotional support? This is the big question we encourage parents to think about when considering online school options. We know the parent and Learning Coach role with K12 brings immense value to students, helping them reach academic milestones and conquer comprehension roadblocks—but we don’t expect you just to take our word for it or to do it alone.

We know your child is your focus and top priority. You want to make the best, informed decision regarding their growth and development. Below is a real-life example from a parent who became a K12 Learning Coach and saw firsthand how they helped transform their child’s educational journey.

From Hands-On to Independent Learning

Connie was initially overwhelmed by the demands of managing her son Jared’s online schooling. In 4th grade, Jared required 4 to 6 hours of supervision per day, which Connie couldn’t sustain while juggling other responsibilities.

However, with the support Connie received as his Learning Coach, not only did Jared’s academic performance improve, but he also became more independent. Jared learned how to manage his time, stay on task, and reach out for support when needed.

Here’s what Connie had to say:

“Thanks to the structure and autonomy provided by the K12 model, Jared learned how to self-motivate and work independently. While I’m still facilitating the daily process, the time commitment and nature of my involvement are much different.”

In this instance, Connie confidently adjusted managing her son’s education and assured his grades and progress would remain strong. She knew that as a dedicated Learning Coach with support herself, her son would get the assistance he needed in a way that worked for her daily schedule and responsibilities too. The support she received from teachers and other parents in the Learning Coach Community provided both guidance and reassurance throughout Jared’s learning journey.

Personalized Learning and Teacher Collaboration

Continuing with Connie’s story, she also benefited from knowing her child would receive tailored, practical guidance from a dedicated teacher trained in virtual instruction—which eased her concerns regarding her own ability to teach her child the necessary coursework.

“I knew there were some subjects I wouldn’t be able to help Jared with,” Connie explains. He could talk to his teacher whenever he had questions about his assignments. Sometimes, the teacher would recommend supplementary content from the Learning Hub to further his understanding.

Knowing that a certified teacher would be available to monitor and support her son’s academic performance made a significant difference for Connie and took the pressure off her as the Learning Coach—she wasn’t on her own. This reassurance allowed her to focus on her daily responsibilities as a parent, confident that her son received the guidance he needed to thrive.

The Role of Learning Coaches in Supporting Emotional Well-Being

We’ve briefly touched on how Learning Coaches take a holistic approach to mentoring and supporting students, but let’s dive deeper into what that means—specifically regarding emotional well-being.

We recognize that anxiety, feelings of overwhelm, and personal struggles can significantly hinder a child’s academic performance. These emotional and psychological challenges can create barriers to learning, making it difficult for students to focus on their studies or reach their full potential.

Here’s how we make a difference by prioritizing personal wellness:

Creating a Safe, Supportive Learning Environment

A Learning Coach helps students navigate academic stress by offering practical strategies. For example, if your child is anxious about a big exam, as their Learning Coach, you can work with them to break down the material into manageable chunks and teach them stress-reduction techniques to help them regain confidence and focus.

Preventing Burnout and Overwhelm

We’re all familiar with unhealthy study habits like last-minute cramming or pulling all-nighters—study methods that aren’t sustainable and rarely work. Learning Coaches can strongly discourage these practices, knowing that academic success is achieved through steady, consistent studying, and personalized support.

Learning Coaches work with students to eliminate poor studying habits and transform learning into a positive experience. While they help promote accountability, they don’t overload students with information or place unreasonable expectations on them. Learning Coaches remind students that it’s all about achieving meaningful, incremental progress over time.

How to Become an Effective Learning Coach

Would you like to become a Learning Coach for your child? Would you benefit from having access to the tools, resources, and strategies necessary to better support their studies?

Public vs. Private Schools: Which Online Option Is Right for Your Child https://www.k12.com/how-online-learning-works/public-vs-private-online-schools/ https://www.k12.com/how-online-learning-works/public-vs-private-online-schools/#respond Wed, 30 Oct 2024 17:32:48 +0000 https://www.k12.com/?p=10680 Your child has more education options than ever before. The days of being limited by location are over, with online learning breaking down the barriers that once restricted students from accessing personalized, high-quality schooling. Now, any child with a computer and an internet connection can access a world of knowledge from the comfort and safety of home.

But did you know there are different types of online learning programs for school-aged children? More specifically, both public and private school programs can be found online.

This means you can choose between a public or private education without compromising the flexibility of home-based learning. The key is deciding which option best suits your child’s unique needs and your family’s situation.

Are you weighing your child’s choice between online public vs. private school? Confident that home learning is the right fit for your family? If so, you’re in the right place. We’re here to compare private and public online schooling options so you can make an informed, confident decision about your child’s future.

What’s the difference between public and private online schools?

There are three major differences between an online private school vs. public school that parents should be aware of when doing their research.

The three key differences are:

  1. Tuition
The cost of public vs. private school is one of the first factors to consider when comparing these options. Public schools, including those online, are tuition-free. Parents may still encounter fees for testing, materials, or extracurricular activities, but these tend to be minimal compared to private schooling.

Private online schools, however, charge tuition. While the cost of a private education online may be more affordable than brick-and-mortar options, tuition can still burden some families financially. For this reason, the cost of private school may be a deciding factor for parents.

It is good to note that some online private schools, including some powered by K12, offer scholarships. Please research your specific state school options for full details on tuition costs and financial aid.

  2. Class Sizes
Another important difference in public vs. private schools is class size. Private schools often have smaller classes, which means students can receive more one-to-one attention from their teachers. This personalized learning environment can make a big difference in student engagement and academic success.

On the other hand, public online schools often have larger class sizes. While this can limit individualized attention, many public programs are designed to provide support in other ways, such as through accessible resources and standardized curriculums. Plus, online public school teachers are often trained in how to engage students in a virtual environment.

  3. Curriculum
When comparing private vs. public school options, consider what kind of education you want for your child. Public schools use curriculums aligned with state standards, ensuring consistency in course offerings and teaching. However, they may offer less specialized courses.

Private online schools are not bound by the same guidelines, giving them more flexibility to create unique and specialized programs. These schools may offer a broader range of subjects, including advanced courses, internships, or project-based learning that encourages creativity and independent thinking.
Public vs. Private Schools: Which Online Option Is Right for Your Child image 5 (name icon Education Philosophy 3)

Explore an in-depth comparison of online private vs. public schools to learn more about the key differences.

Now that we’ve covered the core factors parents should know, let’s take a closer look at the unique benefits of completing school online. You’ll see how online education offers many advantages that can significantly enhance students’ learning experience and set them up for continued success.

Flexibility in Online Learning

One of the most common reasons parents explore public vs. private online education is for the flexibility it offers. Online learning allows families to create schedules that suit their lives and children to learn at their own pace. This flexibility can be a game-changer for students balancing school with extracurricular activities, travel, or other commitments.

In both public and private online schools, students can enjoy greater flexibility in when they complete assignments, offering a level of freedom that traditional schools may not provide. One benefit of K12-powered private schools is an even greater level of flexibility regarding course schedules and self-paced options.

Customization and Specialized Programs

Both public and private online schools provide opportunities for personalized learning, but private schools tend to lead the way when it comes to specialized programming. Private schools often offer tailored curricula, allowing students to choose from a variety of courses, including advanced classes that can even earn them college credits. Additionally, many private schools offer unique project-based learning experiences and internships, giving students a head start on their future careers.

While public online schools also offer some elective courses (K12-powered online public schools actually have a wide range of electives in their diverse course catalogs, including advanced and dual enrollment options), private institutions generally have more flexibility to design innovative programs that meet individual student interests.

Curriculum and Teacher Quality

Online learning can vary in terms of curriculum, depending on whether you choose private or public school. This is mainly due to the regulatory guidelines to which public schools are subject. Your child can still benefit from a great online public school education; it simply means it’s a more standardized approach to teaching and learning.

The state-aligned curriculum in public schools ensures that all students—regardless of economic status or location—receive a consistent and comprehensive education. The purpose is to prepare students equally for tests, college, and future careers. Online public schools also follow state testing requirements.

Alternatively, online private schools don’t have to follow the same requirements for curriculum or testing. They focus on providing each student with individualized and specialized instruction that supports their unique learning style, strengths, and interests.

Costs and Resources

We briefly mentioned the costs associated with online private schools vs. public schools, but let’s expand on the topic further for a more detailed perspective.

Online Public School Costs

Public online schools are tuition-free, but parents may still need to cover:

  • A reliable computer or tablet, required software, and internet services
  • Standardized testing fees
  • Additional workbooks, textbooks, or other materials
  • Participation fees for field trips or in-person events
  • Extra fees for dual enrollment programs (earning college credits in high school)

K12-powered public schools are tuition-free and educational materials are provided, often including tech materials like computers. Please research specific school options in your state for a full sense of any costs.

Online Public School Costs

Private online schools are tuition-based* and often come with additional expenses, such as:

  • Enrollment or application fees
  • Technology fees for maintaining online platforms
  • Costs for specialized programs or electives
  • Fees for Advanced Placement (AP)® exams or other standardized tests

*Fees and costs associated with online schools can vary significantly from one institution to another. Parents are strongly encouraged to contact the specific school directly to clarify any and all expenses, ensuring a clear understanding of the financial commitments involved in enrolling their child. Always verify details to make an informed decision that aligns with your family’s needs.

Socialization and Extracurriculars

This is a key area where online public schools offer an edge over private education. Due to the larger student populations enrolled in online public schools, there’s a greater demand for social committees and extracurricular programming.

Popular activities offered in the public system include:

  • Art competitions
  • Esports leagues
  • Field trips
  • Peer study groups
  • Science clubs, art clubs, leadership clubs, etc.
  • Online workshops or seminars
  • Live online events
  • Mentorship programs

Online private schools may offer fewer socialization opportunities due to their smaller student populations, but they may still provide some great options, including:

  • Field trips
  • Small virtual clubs (chess, coding, reading, etc.)
  • Online workshops or seminars
  • Live online events
  • Mentorship programs

But remember, this is a general overview. It’s always best to research specific online public or private schools to see their social activities and extracurricular programs. Each school is different, and some provide a broad range of virtual clubs, events, or even in-person gatherings to help students stay connected. What matters is finding a school that supports your child’s social development alongside their academics since it makes a big difference to their overall learning experience.

K12 offers both public and private school students extensive extracurricular and social opportunities.

Is online private school better than public school?

Concerned parents who want to make the best decision for their child often ask, “Is private school better than public?” The answer? No.

Many people believe that public schools are better than private, or vice versa, but the truth is that either option can lead to a high-quality education. Plus, both can provide your child with a strong foundation of knowledge to help them achieve their post-secondary goals and obtain fulfilling careers. So, neither choice is automatically better than the other—it really comes down to what fits best with your family’s unique situation and your child’s needs.

Making the Best Choice for Your Child

Choosing between online public vs. private education is a big decision, and your careful consideration reflects that you care about your child’s future. At K12, we’re here to help you find the right balance of flexibility, support, and academic excellence.
